Choosing between the 2020 Ford Ranger and Nissan Frontier isn’t easy. Both of these midsize trucks are sturdy, capable, and modern — so how do you know which one to choose? Our comparison guide is here to help you find the answer.
Configurations and Body Styles: 2020 Nissan Frontier
With five trim models, the Frontier gives you a few extra options. Choose between the base SV, mid grade SV, rugged Desert Runner, off-road-ready Pro-4X, and luxurious SL for the ride that suits you best. The Frontier is also available in three body configurations: an extended King cabin with a 5-foot cargo bed, a crew cab with a 5-foot bed, or a crew cab with a 6.1-foot bed.
The 2020 Ford Ranger lineup is a little more straightforward. This truck may not be as configurable as the Frontier, but it still offers plenty of options. Three trim models — the base XL, mirage XLT, and classy Lariat — provide a sliding scale of comfort and tech features. Choose from two body styles, the extended SuperCab with its 6-foot bed and the SuperCrew cabin with its 5-foot bed.
Rugged Performance: 2020 Ford Ranger
Of these two trucks, the Ranger supplies the most power for a sporty performance, on-road and off. Every Ranger features the same powertrain: a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine paid with a 10-speed automatic transmission. With its 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, the Ranger is quick to get going.
The 2020 Nissan Frontier offers two engine options, though neither is as powerful as the Ford Ranger’s lone engine. The base 2.5-liter four-cylinder offers 152 horses and 171 pound-feet of torque. For an extra kick, you can upgrade to the 4.0-liter V6 for 261 horses and 281 pound-feet of torque.
Move Max Weight: 2020 Ford Ranger
When it comes to towing and hauling, the Ranger gives you the advantage. Ford’s midsize truck can tow up to 7,500 pounds — a best-in-class figure. If you plan to head out into the wilderness with all of your gear, you’ll be pleased to learn that the Ranger can haul max payloads of 2,080 pounds.
While capable, the Frontier can’t quite overcome the Ranger. Properly equipped, Nissan’s midsize truck can tow up to 6,710 pounds. Max payloads reach 1,430 pounds.
Modern Features: 2020 Ford Ranger
Looking for the latest in infotainment and safety tech? The Ranger checks every box. Its Sync 3 infotainment system is easy to use, thanks in part to its quick-responding 8-inch touch screen and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone connectivity. A Wi-Fi hotspot is standard equipment; this feature comes in handy in areas where your phone’s connection starts to dwindle.
High-tech driving aids are also on hand. Every Ranger comes standard with forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, technology with the potential to keep you out of trouble. The Co-Pilto360 package — which includes blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and pedestrian detection — is optional for the base Ranger and standard on the other trim models.
When it comes to modern technology, the 2020 Nissan Frontier trails behind. This midsize truck lacks many of the features that modern drivers expect, such as multiple USB ports and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration.
The 2020 Nissan Frontier has some cool features, but the 2020 Ford Ranger has a lot more of what most people want in a midsize truck. If you’re looking for off-road potential and plenty of towing muscle, the Ranger is your best bet.
